The Houston Move | Property Discovery
A house that refuses to blend in
Over 5,200 square feet of unconventional architecture hidden among more than five wooded acres.
Jeff's Editorial Take
THIS ISN’T A HOUSE FOR EVERYONE.
Houston offers buyers an incredible amount of choice. But after touring hundreds of homes, truly individual architecture can still be surprisingly difficult to find.
This house is different.
Built in 1984, it doesn’t feel like it was designed around a checklist or around maximizing the number of bedrooms that could fit inside it.
Instead, the architecture seems to prioritize volume, natural light, privacy and its relationship with the land.
The result is one of the most unusual properties I’ve toured around Houston.
And that’s exactly why it caught my attention.

The Arrival
YOU DON’T JUST PULL UP TO THIS HOUSE. YOU DISCOVER IT.
The experience begins before you ever reach the front door.
The driveway winds through mature trees before the house gradually appears through the landscape.
Instead of clearing the property and placing one enormous structure in the middle, the house feels embedded within its surroundings.
Dark exterior materials, changing rooflines and multiple architectural volumes allow the structure to sit quietly among the trees.

Built Around the Landscape
THE TREES ARE PART OF THE ARCHITECTURE.
Step inside and the relationship between the house and the property becomes even more apparent.
Soaring interior volumes are paired with enormous areas of glass.
The windows do more than bring light into the rooms. They frame the landscape.
Throughout the house, views of mature trees become part of the interior experience.

THE WINDOWS DON’T JUST LET LIGHT IN. THEY FRAME THE PROPERTY.
Space Without Sameness
OPEN, WITHOUT MAKING EVERYTHING THE SAME ROOM.
One of the things I appreciate about this house is its willingness to let rooms have individual identities.
The kitchen connects the major living spaces without turning the entire main floor into one enormous room.
There’s a formal dining room. A private office. Multiple gathering spaces. Quiet spaces.
And architectural transitions that make moving through the house part of the experience.
This is not the conventional open-concept floor plan buyers see repeated throughout newer construction.
The Primary Retreat
PRIVACY INSIDE THE PRIVACY.
The primary suite continues the same architectural idea found throughout the house: generous space, natural light and a constant connection to the trees outside.

Looking Down
THE HOUSE CHANGES DEPENDING ON WHERE YOU STAND.
The upper level reveals something photographs of individual rooms don’t always communicate: volume.
From the loft and upper walkways, you begin to understand how the different levels, windows and living spaces interact.

Bedrooms
EVEN THE BEDROOMS CONNECT BACK TO THE PROPERTY.
Upstairs, a balcony looks out over the wooded front of the home, and the secondary bedrooms share an unusual arrangement of space — including a shared bath you won’t find repeated in newer floor plans.
It’s the same idea carried one level up: every room faces the property.

The Lower Level
AND THEN THERE’S ANOTHER LEVEL.
The property’s changing grade creates something rarely encountered in Houston-area homes.
A lower level beneath part of the house functions much like a walkout basement.
It adds another dimension to an already unconventional floor plan and reflects how closely the architecture responds to the land.

The People Who Chose It
THEN I LEARNED WHO LIVES HERE.
The current owners are an architect and an interior designer.
They didn’t originally design the house. They chose it.
After walking through the property, that somehow makes perfect sense.
The Outdoor Retreat
THIS IS WHERE THE HOUSE BECOMES A RETREAT.
Step outside and there isn’t a conventional suburban backyard waiting for you.
There are decks extending toward the trees. Paths through the property. A firepit surrounded by woods.
And a pool that feels tucked into the landscape rather than placed in the middle of a backyard.
The experience is less “backyard” and more private retreat.

Five Acres
MORE THAN FIVE ACRES. AND YOU CAN FINALLY SEE WHAT THAT MEANS.
From the air, the relationship between the house and its surroundings becomes clear.
The property sits among more than five wooded acres, giving the house a level of privacy and separation that is increasingly difficult to find around Houston.

FINDING ANOTHER HOUSE THIS SIZE IS EASY. FINDING ANOTHER ONE LIKE THIS ISN’T.

5,200+ SQUARE FEET. ONLY THREE BEDROOMS.
For some buyers, that will immediately remove this house from consideration.
For someone else, it may help explain what makes the property so unusual.
The square footage isn’t dominated by maximizing bedroom count.
Instead, much of the home is devoted to living spaces, architectural volume, gathering areas and the relationship between indoors and outdoors.
This is a house for a specific buyer. And that may be exactly the point.
