What are Houston property taxes and how do MUD districts work?

Houston property taxes range from 1.8% to 3.5%+ of assessed value per year depending on school district, city, and MUD (Municipal Utility District). Texas has no state income tax, which offsets this. MUD districts add an extra 0.3–1.0% in newer suburban communities. Use the free Property Tax Reality Check at thehoustonmove.com/property-taxes to calculate your exact burden by address.

Is Houston Texas a good place to live?

Houston is one of the fastest-growing US cities with 7.3 million residents in the metro area. Pros: no state income tax, affordable homes, world-class medical center, diverse food scene, strong job market (energy, healthcare, aerospace, tech). Cons: summer heat and humidity, car-dependent, flooding risk in some areas, higher property taxes. For most relocators from high-cost states, Houston offers a significantly better quality of life per dollar.

Should I buy new construction or an existing home in Houston?

New construction in Houston offers warranties, modern layouts, game rooms, first-floor primary suites, and energy efficiency — but adds 6–18 months wait time and MUD district taxes. Existing homes offer established neighborhoods, mature trees, faster move-in, and sometimes better lot sizes. Houston's new construction market is one of the strongest in the US.
